WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ward 2 DC Council candidate Martín Miguel Fernández on Friday issued the following statement in praise of the mass demonstrations for racial justice taking place around the city:
“Today’s mass demonstration is a clarion call to lawmakers at every level of our government, from Capitol Hill to the Wilson Building. Police abuse Black, indigenous, and people of color every day — not only in horrifying and unconstitutional misuse of deadly force against men like George Floyd and women like Breonna Taylor, but in hundreds of humiliating and dehumanizing interactions that go overlooked in our community.
To Mayor Bowser and the Council: You must stop playing lip service to the Movement for Black Lives and start taking real action. Murals and warm words are window dressing, not public service. We demand mindful and meaningful divestment from an unjust and abusive police system.
To the thousands of Americans and DC residents flooding our streets to demand justice: Thank you. Not just for today, but for your tireless work. I am so proud of the city that raised me, and so proud to stand with you. By fighting together in this way, and by demanding the real leadership we deserve from our elected officials, we can make real, concrete, and sweeping change to how we keep our communities safe.”
